Black Smoke Rising

Lord Markelhay is not sure what to make of Father Quinlaven's visions. He has heard stories like that from the old priest before, but in light of current events, it is a possible reason for concern.

Markelhay has never fought gnolls; this is the first time in recent memory that the hyena-beastmen have ventured this far from their territory in the plains to the east. Goblins and hobgoblins are all he has experience fighting against.

There is a smaller-sized chainmail shirt that is found for Bramble.

Morning comes too soon, and with dawn, an ill omen: black smoke rising into the sky some ways north of Fallcrest. There is a small cluster of farms and a tiny village called Holwood on the main road but a league north of town...

Markelhay is awake and has mustered a small group of the town guard, six men in all. "There you are," he says as you all approach the gate. "I fear the worst. These men will accompany you as far as the village Holwood." The men have dark looks on their faces.

OOC: I will be able to update your character info above this evening when I get home from work. Thank you all for your patience, I know this is slow moving.

  1. Calix stands with the rest, shivering slightly, though his face remains somewhat reserved. He'd spoken with Father Quinlaven the night before and the old man had agreed that it was best Calix went. Perhaps he might do some good....

Seeing the smoke Calix turns to Bramble and whispers, "Your encampment was north you said? It appears we may not have far to travel at all..."

Seeing the strong men of the guard arranged about, each looking as formidable as Gault, Calix feels a small boost of confidence. "At least we shall be in good company to meet whatever threat lies out there. Uh, are we to ride?" he asks, feeling extremely foolish. He only now realizes that he has almost never ridden a horse before, save for a few misspent "adventures" in his teenage years.

  2. Bramble turned to Calix, "It was...", then he turned North. "As I recall, based on my recollection, it was further North", referring to the smoke. "I may be off, I was moving at a hurried clip, but by my reckoning, that is probably... Holwood, if I don't miss my guess."

He drooped his gaze, and continued with, "We should probably be off..."

When Calix finished with the comment of the guard accompaniment, Bramble added, "Yea, they'll do..." He knelt and tightened the strap of his boot, stood and fed a crumb to his pet and looked to the others, waiting to move North.

  3. Gault had rushed about this morning until he was sure he had gathered all his belongings. Struggling into the unfamiliar mail shirt, the guardsmen checked twice that he had everything he would need.

He falls in with his fellow guardsmen as they mill about in the predawn hours before leaving the gates. Spoiling for the fight to come, the dark smoke across the horizon does nothing to calm the nervousness before the clash of arms.

Looking around to spot his new companions in the group, Gault reflects on how well they defeated the goblins at the bridge. Striving to keep the spirits up he reassures himself that they will prove victorious again today.

  4. Sarhan woke early to gather his things and put together his pack. Having chatted with the occasional adventure, Sarhan knew a good long staff would be invaluable. A ten foot pole would be too hard for a short little gnome to carry, so Sarhan went into his woodshop. He turned two five-foot staffs and a socket to connect the two. "That should do..." he thought to himself. The individual section were still two feet taller than him, but much more manageable.

When he returned to the house, everyone was up to wish him off. His wife fed him well and placed four days of rations into his pack. The kids lined up and Sarhan hugged them goodbye all in turn. His wife was in tears by the time he got to the door. "Don't do anything stupid, you old coot," she teasingly said before giving him a kiss.

With a full belly and high spirits, Sarhan approaches the gate with his poles bobbing along above his head. His spirits are quelled when he sees the black smoke and the somber spirits of his companions. "Biscuits... what have I gotten myself into," he thinks.

  5. Rath travels light, but does bring a sleeping roll and trail cakes. That is to be the worst part of being on the road, lack of proper food.

Still, his master's advice upon setting out rings still in his head:

"Remember, at the first sign of trouble, put one of the larger lads between you and IT. Your spells will be of little use if yer dancing with goblins. Let the warriors dance as you set the tune."

  6. Bramble settled his backpack and ferret companion.

"Shall we be off then?" he asked rhetorically, before taking the first stride of what promised to be an interesting adventure...

  7. "Yes, I suppose so..." Calix agreed, unable to tear his eyes from the smoke since Bramble had pointed out it was most likely not his people's camp. He didn't know much of Holwood, having grown up cloistered in Fallcrest, but he knew that if the gnolls had made it this far south, it was only a matter of time before they reached the walls. Confrontation was inevitable.

He double-checked the straps on his pack, ready to leave when the others are.
